Q&A
What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
In the sixth grade, our school did a “mock trial.” I was selected to be an attorney for one of the sides. After going through that process, I knew that I wanted to be an attorney.
What sets you apart in your area of legal expertise?
I have a wide range of experience in several areas of the law. I have litigated criminal cases, administrative cases, as well as all types of civil litigation. In addition, I have tried countless jury, non-jury, and administrative trials. In addition, I have argued before both State and federal appellate courts.
Could you describe the journey that brought you where you are today?
I went to college at WVU and then law school there. I started my career at a different law firm, but I felt like I had maxed out my growth there. I was given the opportunity to come to this firm and I felt I would be able to grow my career, as well as my skills as a lawyer.
What do you consider your most significant achievement?
Anytime that I have received a “good” result for a client is something that I consider a significant achievement. At the end of the day, my job is to represent an individual. Being able to reach a result that they feel “good” about is always significant to me.
Can you share a case or client experience that had a profound impact on you and/or your career?
When I was approximately 8 or so months as a licensed attorney, I was the second chair in a federal civil rights jury trial. During that trial, I got to argue the motions, as well as examine a number of witnesses (direct and cross). We ultimately prevailed at that trial, but that experience, being so new as an attorney, solidified that I made the right choice in terms of a profession, as I loved every second of being in trial.
If you weren’t an attorney, what alternative career path might you have pursued?
I would be a psychiatrist.
What advice would you give to aspiring attorneys who are going through law school right now?
Find something about the practice of law, whether it be the challenge, the research, advocacy, strategy, etc., that you love, and make sure you keep that in mind. The practice of law is challenging and a grind, and if there is not something you enjoy about it, you should find something else to do.
What’s one thing about the legal profession that might surprise people?
It can actually be a pretty fun career, despite the constant grind and hard work.
Outside of practicing law, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your free time?
Fly fishing, mainly for trout.
What source of inspiration or motivation has been the most significant driving force in your professional career and in your personal life?
I have twin daughters. They are the source of inspiration to me, as I would like to ensure that they are provided for, as well as setting the example to them about working hard at something you very much enjoy.
